語源
「Mapuche」はマプドゥングン語（マプチェの言語）に由来し、語要素の'mapu'は「土地・大地」、'che'は「人々」を意味する。
この呼称はマプドゥングン語での自称に由来する。歴史的にスペイン語話者などは外部呼称として「Araucano／Araucanian（アラウカノ）」を使ったが、現在は自称である「Mapuche」が英語やスペイン語でも一般的になっている。
もともとは「土地」＋「人々」を意味していたが、時代とともに民族集団（およびその言語・文化）を指す固有名詞として使われるようになった。
