語源
「mandragora」はラテン語の語 'mandragora' に由来し、さらにギリシャ語の 'μάνδραγορας'（転写して 'mandragoras'）にさかのぼるとされる。最終的な起源は不確かで、近東の諸言語との関連が指摘されている。
『mandragora』はギリシャ語 'mandragoras' からラテン語 'mandragora' に変化し、その後中英語期に（関連語 'mandrake' とともに）入ってきて、最終的に現代英語の 'mandragora' として残った。
当初は植物そのものを指していたが、次第に民間伝承や魔術の対象である『根（マンドレイク）』を意味する用法も持つようになった。
