語源
「Gymnospermae」はニューラテン語に由来し、最終的には古代ギリシャ語の'gymnós'（裸の）と'spérma'（種）から来ている。
古代ギリシャ語の'gymnós'と'spérma'が結合され、古典・近代の植物学ラテン語で『裸子植物類』を表す'Gymnospermae'が形成され、19世紀の植物学文献で確立された。
もともとは『裸』と『種』という意味だったが、その核となる意味は保持され、種子が果実に包まれない植物を指す学名として用いられるようになった。
