語源
「GPS」は英語の語句「Global Positioning System」から来ており、'global'は「世界的な」、'positioning'は「位置を特定すること」、'system'は「体系・装置」を意味する。
「Global Positioning System」は米国防総省の衛星航法計画の正式名称として使われ、以前の呼び名である「NAVSTAR」と関連して普及し、略語「GPS」が技術用語および一般語として定着した。
当初は主に米軍用の航法システムを指していたが、やがて民生利用の衛星航法全般やそれを利用する機器を指す語として広く使われるようになった。
