語源
'Englishism'は現代英語で、語 'English' と接尾辞 '-ism' を結合して作られ、英語に関連する特徴・慣習・産物を示す語として用いられる。
'English'は古英語の 'Englisc'（アングル人に関する）に由来し、さらにプロト・ゲルマン語 '*Anglaz' に遡る。接尾辞 '-ism' はギリシャ語 '-ismos' からラテン語・フランス語を経て現代英語に入った。これらが結合して 'Englishism' になった。
構成要素は元々は人々や言語（'English'）と体系・慣習（'-ism'）を指していたが、現代では『英語の特色』や『英語由来の用法』という意味に発展した。
