「Deccan」はプラークリット語の「dakkhinā」に由来し、「南」を意味した。
「Deccan」はサンスクリット語の「dakṣiṇa」（南）からプラークリット語の「dakkhinā」へ変化し、最終的に現代英語の「Deccan」になった。
もともとは「南」を意味していたが、時代とともに「インド南部の高原地域」を指すようになった。
