語源
「Chenopodium」は新ラテン語に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の『chenopodion』にさかのぼる。ここで『chen-（chēn）』は「ガチョウ（がちょう）」、『pod-（pous）』は「足（あし）」を意味した。
『Chenopodium』はギリシャ語の『chenopodion（χηνόποδιον）』から植物学ラテン語（新ラテン語）に入ってきて、現代の学名『Chenopodium』となった。
当初は葉の形が『ガチョウの足』のようであることを指したが、次第に植物の属名として定着し、現在は主に分類学上の名称として用いられる。
