語源
「シャラント」はラテン語の『Carantonus』に由来し、最終的にはゴール語（ケルト語）起源と考えられるが、正確な語根は不明である。
『Charente』はラテン語の『Carantonus』（地域名のラテン語化）から古フランス語の『Charente』を経て、現代の『Charente』になった。
当初は川の地名であったが、時間を経て川の名前はそのままに、行政区（県）の名称にも用いられるようになった。
