「Chalcedonian」はラテン語後期の語『Chalcedonius』に由来し、『Chalcedon』（451年の公会議が開かれた都市名）を指す。
『Chalcedonius』はギリシャ語『Khalkēdōníos』（Χαλκηδώνιος）から変化し、『Khalkēdṓn』（Χαλκηδών）に由来、さらに中世ラテン語や教会拉致語を経て英語の『Chalcedonian』になった。
当初は『カルケドン（都市）に関する』という意味だったが、次第に『カルケドン公会議の決定（教義）を支持する／それに関する』という現在の主な意味へと変化した。
