語源
『Castellan』は中世ラテン語の『castellanus』に由来し、最終的にはラテン語『castellum』（城・要塞）にさかのぼる。
『Castellan』は中世ラテン語の『castellanus』から古フランス語の『castelain』などを経て中英語の『castellan』となり、現代英語の『castellan』になった。
当初は『城に属するもの／城に関する』という広い意味だったが、次第に『城の守護者・管理者』を指すようになった。
