語源
「Aramaic」はギリシャ語の語 'Aramaïkos'（Ἀραμαϊκός）に由来し、アラム語を指した。
「Aramaïkos」は晩期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の 'Aramaeus/Aramaica' を経て、フランス語やラテン語形を通じて現代英語の 'Aramaic' になった。
当初は「アラム（地名）やアラム人に関する」を意味していたが、次第にそれらに関連する言語・文字を指すようになり、さらに関連する言語群全体を表す語へと広がった。
