「Aragon」はスペイン語の「Aragón」に由来し、最終的には河川名「Aragón（アラゴン川）」から採られている。河川名のさらに古い語源は不明で、先ローマ時代やバスク・イベリア語派の起源の可能性がある。
「Aragon」は河川名「Aragón」から変化して、フランク期／中世の伯領（County）を指し、やがて中世の「アラゴン王国」を意味するようになった。その君主領は後にアラゴン王冠の一部となり、近代では現代の自治州を指すようになった。
当初は河川名「Aragón」を指していたが、時間とともにその河に関連する領域（中世の王国）を意味するようになり、今日ではスペイン北東部の現代の自治州を指すようになった。
