語源
「Arabicism」は英語に由来し、形容詞「Arabic」＋接尾辞「-ism」から作られた。ここで「Arabic」は「アラブ人に関する」、接尾辞「-ism」は「状態・性質」を意味する。
「Arabic」は中期フランス語の「arabique」や中世ラテン語の「Arabicus」を経て、さらに遡るとアラビア語の「ʿArab（عرب）」に由来する。英語では生産的な接尾辞「-ism」を付けて「Arabicism」が形成された。
当初「Arabicism」と呼ばれたものは単に「アラブに関するもの」と識別されていたが、次第にアラビア語からの借用語や他言語への文法・文体的影響を指す語として特化して使われるようになった。
