語源
「Apus」は近代ラテン語／新ラテン語から来ており、語源はギリシャ語の'apous'（ἀπούς）。接頭辞の'a-'は「ない」を、'pous'（ποῦς）は「足」を意味します。
『Apus』はギリシャ語の'apous'（足のない）から新ラテン語に取り入れられました。近世の欧州文献で楽園の鳥の名として用いられ、のちにその鳥を表す南天の星座名やツバメ類の属名『Apus』として定着しました。
当初は「足のない」という意味でしたが、時を経て星座名やツバメ類の属名として使われるようになり、現代では文字通りの意味はほとんど残っていません。
