語源
「Antigua」はスペイン語の語『antigua』（『antiguo』の女性形）に由来し、『古い』『古代の』を意味した。コロンブス（または初期のスペイン人探検者）がセビリアの教会『Santa María la Antigua』にちなみ島を名づけたことに由来する可能性がある。
『Antigua』はスペイン語『antiguo/antigua』を経て、さらにラテン語の『antiquus』（古い、古代の）に遡れる。スペイン語の形が地名として用いられ、英語に取り入れられた。
元々は『古い』『古代の』という意味だったが、次第に地名（カリブの島やグアテマラの都市、さらには国名）として用いられるようになり、英語では一般形容詞としての用法は影を潜めた。
