語源
『Anthracotheria』は学術ラテン語に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語のἄνθραξ（ánthrax、石炭）とθηρίον（thēríon、獣）が語源で、分類群を表す接尾辞『-ia』が付加されている。
『Anthracotheria』は19世紀に化石の属名『Anthracotherium』から学術ラテン語として作られた。属名は石炭（coal）に由来する化石産状を反映しており、そこから上位の群名『Anthracotheria』が派生した。
当初は化石の産状に基づく『石炭の獣』のような意味合いがあったが、次第に関連する絶滅哺乳類全体を指す分類名として用いられるようになった。
