語源
「anthracothere」は新ラテン語の語『Anthracotherium』に由来し、ギリシャ語の' anthrax'（炭・石炭）と'therion'（獣）が語源である。
『anthracothere』は19世紀に命名された新ラテン語の属名『Anthracotherium』から変化し、最終的にAnthracotheriidae科の成員を指す英語の普通名になった。
当初は文字どおり『炭の獣（coal beast）』を意味したが、次第に化石記載に基づく『カバに似た絶滅した偶蹄類の一群』という現代的な意味に発展した。
