語源
「Anolis」はスペイン語の語 'anolis' に由来し、このスペイン語形は初期植民者が現地で用いていたカリブ系の諸言語（記録に残る 'anoli' 等）から採られたと考えられる。
『anolis』（スペイン語）の呼び名が自然史学者によってラテン化され、18世末〜19世紀初頭に学名（Neo-Latin）として『Anolis』が確立された。
当初はカリブなどの小型トカゲに対する現地の通称を指したが、次第にその分類群全体を指す学名『Anolis』として定着した。
