米国の基準・規格
語源
「American-standard」は「American」と「standard」の複合語である。『American』は探検家アメリゴ・ヴェスプッチにちなむ地名『America』に由来する。『standard』は古フランス語『estandart』などを経て英語に入り、もともとは旗や標（しるし）を指した。
『American』は地名『America』（『Amerigo』に由来）から派生して近代英語で形容詞形『American』になった。『standard』は古フランス語『estandart』から中英語を経て、現代では規則や規格の意味に発展した。両者が結合して『米国に関連する規格』という意味になった。
当初『standard』は『旗・標』を意味していたが、次第に『規則・基準・規格』の意味へと変化した。それにより『American-standard』は『旗』ではなく『米国に関連する基準』を指すようになった。
