語源
『Allegheny』はレナペ（デラウェア）語に由来すると考えられ、'oolikhanna' のようなアルゴンキン系の語から来ており、'川'や'美しい川'を意味した可能性がある。
『Allegheny』は17～18世紀の植民地期の地図や記録を通じて英語に入り、'Alleghene' のような表記を経て最終的に川や地域名として 'Allegheny' に定着した。
当初は主にアレゲニー川（河川）を指していたが、次第に周辺の高地・山脈（アレゲニーズ／アレゲニー山脈）にも名称が広がった。
