語源
'1,4-phenylenediamine'は現代の化学命名（IUPACなど）に由来し、有機化学で使われるNew Latinの'phenyl'に由来する'phenylene'と、ギリシャ語の接頭辞'di-'（2つの意）および'amine'（アンモニア由来）を組み合わせた語である。
'1,4-phenylenediamine'は19世紀から20世紀の化学文献で使われた'p-phenylenediamine'や'para-phenylenediamine'といった慣用名から発展し、現代では数値表記の'1,4-'が体系的命名として標準化された。
