語源
「verandah」はポルトガル語の「varanda」（長いバルコニーや手すり）に由来し、植民地時代の南アジアとの接触を介して伝わった可能性がある。
「verandah」はポルトガル語の「varanda」や、ヒンドゥスターニー語の「varaṇḍā／barānda」などの影響を受け、17–18世紀に英語に入り、現在の「verandah（またはveranda）」の綴りで定着した。
当初はバルコニーや手すり、盛り上がったプラットフォームを指したが、次第に建物に付随する屋根付きの外側のポーチや回廊を意味するようになった。
