語源
「vectorize」は英語の'vector'（ラテン語'Vector'、ラテン語の'vehere'「運ぶ」を語源）と、ギリシャ語'-izein'を経た接尾辞'-ize'（「～にする、～化する」）の結合に由来する。
「vectorize」は近代英語で生産的な接尾辞'-ize'を'vector'に付けて作られた語で、コンピュータ・グラフィックスや数学的用語が発達した19～20世紀に技術用語として使われ始めたと考えられる。
もともと'vector'はラテン語で「運ぶ者」を意味し、動詞形は「ベクトルとして表す・する」を意味した。そこから派生して画像のベクトル化やデータのベクトル表現、（まれに）生物学的ベクターへの挿入など、現代の専門的用法に拡張された。
