語源
「u」はラテン文字に由来し、最終的にはフェニキア文字の「waw(ワウ)」に遡る。古典・中世ラテンでは形は「V」として書かれ、後に母音を表す丸い形の「U」が発達した。
「u」はラテンの「V」(母音と子音の両方に用いられた)から中世の写本形態で丸い母音形「u」と尖った子音形「v」に分かれ、最終的に現代の「u」になった。起源はエトルリアやギリシャの形を経てフェニキアの「waw」に遡る。
当初は子音(後に子音と母音の両方)を表していたが、時代を経て母音字「u」として定着し、子音は別に『v』で表されるようになった。
