語源
「topology」はギリシャ語の語 'topos' と 'logia' に由来し、'topos' は「場所」、'logia' は「研究」を意味した。
「topology」は近代の学術用語として（ニューラテン語・近代ギリシャ語の語構成から）形成され、19世紀に英語に取り入れられた（数学的意味はヨハン・ベネディクト・リスティングなどの数学者によって普及）。言語的にラテン語・ドイツ語を経て現代英語の 'topology' になった。
