語源
「surface-dweller」は近代英語で「surface（表面）」と「dweller（住む人・生物）」を組み合わせてできた複合語で、表面に住む人や生物を表す。
「surface」は古フランス語の'surface'、さらにラテン語の'superficies'（'super-'＝上、'facies'＝面）に由来する。「dweller」は動詞'dwell'の派生語で、古英語・中英語の形を経て「住む人」を表す接尾辞'-er'で作られた。これらが近代英語で結合して複合語になった。
もともとは「上側・面」を意味する語と「住む人」を意味する語だったが、やがて合成されて「表面に住む者」という現在の意味になった。
