語源
「substituent」はラテン語に由来し、特に「substituere」の現在分詞形に由来する。'substituere' は「（場所を）置き換える」という意味（'sub-'「下・近く」＋ 'statuere'「置く」）。
ラテン語 'substituere' は後期ラテン語／中世ラテン語で現在分詞 'substituens/substituent-' となり、最終的に英語で「置換するもの」を示す名詞 'substituent' になった。
当初は「（何かを）置き換える人・行為」を意味していたが、やがて「（特に化学で）別のものに置き換わるもの」という現在の意味に発展した。
