語源
「submarine」はラテン語の要素とフランス語の影響に由来する：ラテン語の 'sub-' は「下（〜の下）」、ラテン語 'marinus'（'mare' に由来）は「海の」を意味し、フランス語 'sous-marin' を経て英語に取り入れられた。
「submarine」はフランス語の 'sous-marin'（'sous'＝下、'marin'＝海の）から英語化され、ラテン語の 'sub-' + 'mare/marinus' の合成語として17〜19世紀に英語で使われるようになった。
当初は「海の下にあるもの（下＋海の）」を表していたが、次第に『海中で航行する船（潜水艦）』という現在の意味に特化していった。
