「structuralist（構造主義者）」はフランス語の 'structuraliste' に由来し、語幹の 'structure' は最終的にラテン語 'structura'（『築く』を意味する 'struere' に由来）に遡り、接尾辞 '-iste' は支持者・従事者を示す。
