語源
「stenographer」は現代英語に由来し、語源はギリシャ語の要素にさかのぼる。New Latinや近代語を経て、狭いを意味する「steno-」と書くを意味する「-graph」が結びついている。
ギリシャ語の要素『stenographos』からNew Latin／近代語の『stenography』や『stenograph』が生まれ、18–19世紀に英語で『stenography』が採用され、それから『stenographer（速記者）』という人を示す派生語が作られた。
