語源
「square off」は「square」＋「off」から成る。『square』は最終的にラテン語を経て古フランス語から来ており、ラテン語の『exquadrare』（'ex-'＋'quadrare'）は「四角にする、均す」の意を持つ。『off』は古英語の『of/ off』で「離れて・～から」を意味した。
『square』は古フランス語（例：esquier／escuare）から英語に入り、『quadra-』に由来するラテン語の語根を持つ。複合語『square off』は18～19世紀にボクシングなどのスポーツ用語として「正対する姿勢を取る」の意味で発達し、やがて一般的に「対立・対決する」の意味を持つようになった。
もともとは文字どおり「四角くする」「四角い姿勢を取る」という意味だったが、そこから転じて「（相手と）距離を取って向き合う＝対立する・対決する」という比喩的意味へと発展し、現在はこちらの意味で使われることが多い。
