語源
「spice」は古フランス語の 'espice' に由来し、さらにラテン語の 'species'（種類・品目）に由来する。'species' は品物や商品を指した。
古フランス語 'espice' が中英語で 'spice' に変化し、最終的に現代英語の 'spice' になった。意味はラテン語の一般的な「種類・商品」から芳香性の調味料に狭まった。
