語源
「space」（および派生形の「spacing」）は古フランス語の 'espace' に由来し、さらにラテン語の 'spatium' に遡る。'spatium' は「空間・広がり・距離」を意味した。
ラテン語の 'spatium' が古フランス語の 'espace' に変化し、中英語で 'space' になった。現代英語の名詞・動詞 'space' に接尾辞 '-ing' が付いて 'spacing' が生じた。
当初は物理的な「空間・広がり」を意味していたが、次第に「物と物のあいだの距離」や「間隔をあける行為」という意味に特化し、それが名詞・動名詞の 'spacing' につながった。
