語源
「sociophobia」は近代英語の造語で、接頭辞「socio-」はラテン語「socius」経由で「仲間・社会」を意味し、接尾辞「-phobia」はギリシャ語「phobos」から「恐怖」を意味する。
「socio-」はラテン語「socius」から発展し「social」に関連する語形成で用いられ、「-phobia」はギリシャ語「phobos」由来で「agoraphobia」や「claustrophobia」などと同様に新ラテン語・現代英語で結合されて用いられてきた。
当初は「仲間や社会に関連する恐怖」を意味するために作られ、現在では臨床的な社会不安（social phobia）を指す用法と、人や社会に対する一般的な恐れ・嫌悪を指す緩い用法の両方で使われるようになった。
