「sex-negative」は英語で、'sex'と'negative'の複合語に由来する。'sex'はラテン語の' sexus'に由来し『性（の区別）』を意味し、'negative'はラテン語の'negativus'（'negare'から）に由来し『否定する』を意味した。
'sex'はラテン語'sexus'から入り（古仏語'sexe'が中英語での用法に影響を与えた場合もある）、現代英語の'sex'となった。'negative'は古仏語'negatif'を経てラテン語'negativus'から英語に入った。'sex-negative'という複合語は20世紀後半〜21世紀初頭の議論で、'sex-positive'と対比して用いられるようになった。
