語源
「scepticism」は近代ラテン語・フランス語に由来し、具体的にはフランス語の「scepticisme」と近代ラテン語の「scepticismus」に由来します。語根はギリシャ語の「skeptikos（調べる／考察する人）」です。
「scepticism」はギリシャ語の「skeptikos」から後期ラテン語・近代ラテン語、さらにフランス語「scepticisme」を経て、17世紀に英語の「scepticism」として定着しました。
当初は「調べる・考察する態度」を意味しましたが、時代とともに「主張に対する疑い・不信（または確実性を疑う哲学的立場）」という現代的な意味に変化しました。
