語源
『rescission』はラテン語の『rescissio』（動詞『rescindere』に由来）に由来し、『re-』は「後ろ・元に戻す」を、『scindere』は「切る・裂く」を意味した。
『rescission』は中世ラテン語の『rescissio』から発し、古フランス語／アンゴ＝ノルマン語を経て中英語に入り、現代英語の『rescission』となった。
当初は「切り離す・裂き取る」という字義的な意味だったが、次第に「（法令などの）取り消し・廃止」という現在の意味に変化した。
