語源
「registry」は中世ラテン語の『registrum』に由来し、そこでは『registr-』は「書かれた記録」または「登録する行為」を指した。
『registry』は古フランス語の『registre』（中世ラテン語『registrum』を経由）から変化し、動詞 'register' に接尾辞 '-y' が付いて現代英語の 'registry' になった。
当初は「記録された一覧」や「記録を保管する場所」を意味しており、時間をかけて意味は広がったが、基本的な意味は大きく変わらず、現在ではコンピューター化された記録システムにも用いられるようになった。
