この語はラテン語の「refractio」から古フランス語（Old French）の「refraction」を経て中英語に入り、現代英語の「refraction」になった。
当初は「（物を）折る／壊す」という意味があり、時間を経て物理・光学で使われる「光や波の屈折（曲がり）」という専門的な意味に発展した。
