語源
「prosimian」はニューラテン語の『Prosimia』に由来し、接頭辞の『pro-』は「〜の前」を、ラテン語の『simia』は「サル（類）」を意味した。
『prosimian』はニューラテン語『Prosimia』から変化し、19世紀に英語の『prosimian』として採用され、『サルに先行する（原始的な）霊長類』を指す語になった。
当初は「サルに先行する（より原始的な存在）」を意味していたが、現在では「キツネザル、ロリス、ガラゴ（場合によりターシア）を含む霊長類の一群」を指すようになった。
