'pro-white'はラテン語接頭辞'pro'（「～のために／支持する」の意）と英語の'white'（古英語'hwīt'「白い」）の結合に由来する。
'pro-'はラテン語の接頭辞として英語に入り、近現代英語で複合語を作る際に用いられる。'white'は古英語'hwīt'から中英語を経て現代英語に至る。'pro-white'という複合語は20〜21世紀の比較的新しい政治的・社会的用法である。
