語源
「preposition」はラテン語の語『praepositio』に由来し、『prae-』は「前」を、『positio』（『ponere』由来）は「置くこと」を意味しました。
『preposition』は中世ラテン語の『praepositio』から変化し、古フランス語の『preposition』を経て、中英語の『prepositioun』となり、現代英語の『preposition』になりました。
当初は「前に置くこと」を意味しましたが、時間とともに「名詞や代名詞の前に置かれて関係を示す語」という現在の文法的意味に発展しました。
