語源
'pre-tensioning'はラテン語に由来し、接頭辞の「prae」（現代英語の'pre-'の起源）とラテン語の語根「tensio」（'tendere'に由来）から成り、『prae-』は「前」、'tendere'は「伸ばす／引っ張る」を意味した。
'pre-tensioning'は現代英語で接頭辞'pre-'と名詞'tension'（ラテン語'tensio'由来）を結合して生じた技術用語で、19〜20世紀の土木・建築技術の発展に伴いプレテンション工法を指す語として定着した。
もともとは『伸ばすこと』など広い意味を持っていたが、次第に構造工学での『あらかじめ張力を与えること』という専門的な意味に限定されて定着した。
