「posterior」はラテン語の'posterior'（'posterus'の比較級）に由来し、'posterus'は「後に来る・次に続く」を意味した。
ラテン語の'postеrior'が後期ラテン語／中世ラテン語を経て中英語の'postеrior'になり、現代英語の'posterior'になった。
当初は「後に来る・順序的に後の」を意味していたが、やがて「後ろに位置する」という空間的意味を持ち、さらに解剖学的な「尻」や統計学的な「事後確率」のような専門的用法も生じた。
