「post-」はラテン語で「～の後」を意味する接頭辞で、「Classical」は最終的にはラテン語の'classicus'（階級に属する／一流の）に由来する語から来ていることにより構成されている。
ラテン語の'post-'と、ラテン語'classicus'（→ラテン後期／中世ラテン語→フランス語'classique'→英語'classical'）が近代英語で合成されて『post-Classical』という形容詞となった。
