「pluralist」は英語に由来し、語『plural』（最終的にはラテン語『pluralis』「2つ以上」）に代理者を表す接尾辞『-ist』が付いてできた語である。『-ist』は「～を支持する人、～を行う者」を示す。
『plural』はラテン語の『pluralis』（『plur-』『plures』「より多く（複数のうちの）」に由来）から来て、古フランス語の『pluriel』を経て中英語の『plural』になり、現代英語では接尾辞『-ist』を付して『pluralist』が作られた。
