語源
「pluperfect」はラテン語を経て入った語で、具体的には「plus quam perfectus」（または「plusquamperfectus」）に由来する。'plus' は「より多く／より（more）」、'quam' は「～よりも（than）」、'perfectus' は「完了した／完成した」を意味した。
「pluperfect」はラテン語の表現「plus quam perfectus」から中世あるいは近代ラテン語の「plusquamperfectus」となり、16～17世紀に学術的・文法的用語として英語に借用された。
元は文字通り「より完了した（more than perfect）」という意味だったが、次第に「別の過去の動作よりも前に完了していたことを示す時制」を指す専門用語になった。
