語源
「pleonasm」はギリシャ語の『πλεονασμός（pleonasmós）』に由来し、『πλεόν（pleón）』は「より多い／過剰」を意味した。
『πλεονασμός』は後期ラテン語の『pleonasmus』やフランス語の『pléonasme』を経て、近代に英語の『pleonasm』として借用された。
当初は『過剰』や『過多』を広く指したが、次第に言語における不要な語句や冗長を意味するようになった。
