語源
「plasmapheresis」は近代ラテン語・ギリシャ語に由来し、ギリシャ語の「plasma」（形づくられたもの）と「pherein」（運ぶ）に由来する語幹から成る。
「plasmapheresis」は20世紀に医学用語として「plasma」+ 接辞「-pheresis」（ギリシャ語の「apheresis：取り去ること」に由来）を結合して作られ、血漿の除去または交換を指す現代医学用語になった。
当初は文字通り「血漿を運び出す（取り去る）こと」を意味しており、時間がたっても血漿を除去・交換する手技という専門的な意味が保たれている。
