「phenanthrene」は19世紀の化学命名から生じた語で、ベンゼン誘導体を指す旧語「phene」と「anthrene」（「anthracene」から）を組み合わせたものであり、「anthracene」はギリシャ語のánthrax（石炭）に由来する。
